Intro to KLR shocks. The pre 2008 KLR shock is very weak in its stock form. The valving stack does not have any valving for rebound dampening at all. It simply uses a tapered orifice controlled by the adjuster at the bottom of the shaft. This is very old technology. The 2008+ shocks are better as in they have a piston with both compression and rebound valving that I can set for your needs.
In our stage II or better shock rebuilds, we remove all the stock valving stacks and replace them with a high end Race Tech Gold Valve. For 2008+ bikes we set the valving stack for your use and what spring was installed. This gives you customizable valving for both the compression and rebound sides of the piston. I set up all my valving in a two stage stack. This will give you a nice compliant ride when tooling down the road, but stiffen up when pushed hard.
The stock KLR shock also has another drawback. It is an emulsion shock. That means the oil and the nitrogen charge are able to mix. Imagine a half filled soda bottle. Shake it up (like when riding) and the soda gets all full of bubbles. This constantly changes the way the oil flows through the valving shims. I offer an option to my stage one and two shock rebuilds of installing a custom floating piston that separates the oil from nitrogen. You will notice that the shock will perform the same throughout the day and will not fade when pushed hard.
NEW!!!! Hard Anodizing available for all aluminum bodied, uncoated shocks.
This reduces wear, increases shock action, and prolongs the life of the shock and fluid.
This option can be added to any package below for $30
